What a longevity workup actually measures
A standard physical is built to find disease. A longevity workup is built to find direction. Here is what changes about the testing, and why.
PlaceholderScreening asks a yes or no question. Do you have the disease, or do you not. It is a good question and modern medicine answers it well, which is why you should keep getting screened.
It is not the only question worth asking. The other one is how fast, and in which direction. Two people can both be told they are fine and be on completely different paths, and nothing in a standard annual will separate them.
What a standard panel leaves out
A typical annual covers a small set of markers chosen because they catch common problems cheaply. That is a reasonable design for a population. It is a poor design for a person.
What tends to be missing is anything about how your cells are producing energy, how your blood vessels are aging compared with the rest of you, what your hormones are doing across a whole day and not at one moment on a Tuesday morning, and what you have been exposed to over thirty years of living somewhere.
None of that is exotic. It is simply outside what the appointment was designed to find.
What gets looked at instead
It helps to think in domains. A list of individual markers turns into a menu, and a menu turns into shopping.
Biological aging, measured by how your body is behaving instead of by your birthdays. Cellular and mitochondrial function, which is the energy question and sits underneath a great deal of what people describe as feeling flat. Metabolic function, which is where most preventable illness in this country starts. Vascular health, which ages quietly and on its own schedule. Hormonal balance, read across time. And environmental toxin burden, which is unglamorous and matters more than most people expect.
The reason for covering all six is to find the one or two that are costing you something.
The results are not the product
You can buy a large panel online this afternoon without speaking to anybody. Plenty of people do, and most of them end up with a spreadsheet they cannot act on.
The value is in the reading. Which findings matter for you specifically, which are noise, which two things would change your trajectory the most, and which can wait a year. That judgment comes from having seen a very large number of people, and it is the part that no test kit sells.
